Percutaneous Vertebroplasty in Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures

Abstract
The number of patients diagnosed with vertebral body compression fractures with osteoporosis has risen in proportion to an increase in the elderly population. In recent years, percutaneous vertebroplasty, osteoplasty and kyphoplasty have been introduced for the treatment vertebral body compression fracture with osteoporosis. These procedures have been reported to provide immediate pain relief and early mobilization. Indications, methodology and possible adverse effects of percutaneous vertebroplasty is presented in this review. While the therapeutic effects of this procedure appears to be promising, further research is needed to evaluate the long- term effects and also to enhance its efficacy.
